#5 on Berman's TOP 12 Wine Buys of 2022
Michel Ecard’s old vine red from Savigny-lès-Beaune is outstanding. Grapes from these 50+ years old Pinot Noir vines express themselves with ethereal elegance and finesse as well as by its aromatic complexity.
This luminous wine fills your mouth with subtle flavors of red and black cherries, wild strawberries, red plums, pekoe tea, cinnamon and clove, and a smidge of white pepper. It is crisp and refined with excellent persistence on the finish.
Michel launched his own domaine in 2005 after years of winemaking experience working with his dad in Savigny, as well as stints at wineries around the world. He is continuing his father's legacy by crafting wines that honor his dad's elegant, finesse style with Pinot Noir.
Today Michel and his wife, Joanna, are a two-person winery, crafting all their wines by hand. It is definitely a “micro-operation”, with Michel in the vineyards taking care of his grapes, and in the cellar making the wine: from field to bottle.
Michel Ecard’s Savigny-lès-Beaune “Vieilles Vignes” vineyard is located south of Pernand-Vergelesses and across from the hill of Corton. It has a favorable southern exposure, great for growing Pinot Noir. He farms about five hectares of vineyards, all in Savigny-lès-Beaune, including parcels of four different Premier Crus.
