Enologist: Jean Michel Vache

History: Operated by the young, energetic and bright, Jean Michel Vache, Domaine le Clos des Cazaux has vineyards in both Gigondas and Vacqueyras. 25 Ha of vines are located on the stony slopes of Vacqueyras and 15 Ha in Gigondas. The vineyards are encircled by the beautiful mountainous range, “The Dentelles de Montmirail.” The very rich soil and optimal sun exposure give strength to the grape varieties, syrah, mourvedre, and grenache. All of the grapes are hand picked and are traditionally vinified. Jean Michel keeps his wines in cask longer, and releases his wine later, than most other surrounding vineyards.

While Vacqueyras has less renown than either Gigondas or Chateauneuf du Pape, several of its domaines make wine that can often equal them or surpass, and they fractionally less. Look for this on the list at Hamersley’s Bistro in Boston .
